STORY
When I started taking care of the colony in late Spring of 2010, most of the cats were regulars and I would see most of them on a daily basis. There was one cat that I only saw at night, and I saw him maybe 3 times in 5 months.
When I started trapping in late summer, I figured I would never get the black and white one (I hadn't even bothered to name it, that's how rarely I saw the cat!). Surprisingly enough, he was the FIRST one I caught! When I dropped him off at the vet in the morning, I had left his name field blank and said I'd think up something by the time I picked up in the afternoon.
Since this cat was so mysterious, and elusive, I wanted a name that reflected that. Didn't want "Shadow", as that's much too common - and he's not all black anyway. Eventually I decided on Rune, as it sounded gender-neutral (still didn't know if the cat was male or female!), and as it means a mystical symbol - and he was sort of a "symbol" of the stereotypical elusive stray cat. When I picked him up, the vet said the cat was male and about 2 years old.
I don't remember when I caught/released Rune, but it was no later than September (I'll have to call the vet and get his file, maybe!). I have seen him 3 times since then, always at/after sunset. Once on the patio at the feeding station, once running off into the grape vines, and once up by the thicket where the other ferals live.
