STORY
I had just started taking care of the colony in April of 2010. Cynthia (gray "tuxedo") was named because it means "Lady of the moon". So when her kittens were born, I figured I would name them after minerals and stones (since the moon is a big rock). Zinny was originally Chert - but when I decided to keep her, I changed it to Zinara. It means "thistle-like". She is fluffy like a thistle flower, but when she gets upset, she can certainly get 'prickly'!
She lived inside the house during October while recovering from a horrible respiratory infection, and get spayed. My dad was getting upset at having "all those d*m cats running around" in the house, so I had to put them back outside. Zinara was not tame enough to adopt, so I let Disco stay with her, as I didn't want to stress Zinny out with having to lose her last sibling (Tourmaline and Zircon were already adopted at this point).
Despite being relatively tame, including sleeping on the bed with me (the picture below is of when I got up one morning, and she finally decided to stay put, rather than running away as usual when I got up and moving), as soon as I had to put her outside... she went wild again! I was sort of hoping that Disco, who continued being tame, would influence Zinny to calm down a bit.
Unfortunately, I have not seen Disco since mid-March. Zinny seems alright - she's always out waiting for me at the feeding station every morning. In fact, she actually let me pet her the other day (April 6, 2011)! Usually she stays just out of reach.
UPDATE
Now that the weather is warm, I am trying to finish my TNR program. I have 2 cats left! Tangelo, a male orange tabby, and Cynthia (who just had kittens this week! AURGH!).
Zinny has been inside the house for the last month or so. She kept going in the trap to get the bait... ironically, she would not go in there last year, when I was trying to catch her to get her treated for pnemonia and be spayed! So the silly girl has now settled in, and enjoying (at least seems to be) indoor life. Nebula is SO happy to finally have somebody to play with! Paizly can finally be left alone to her cranky ol'e self, and the two younger cats chase each other around the house and wrestle all they want!
